Kingdom of Pontus, Polemo II with Tryphaina, circa 38-64. Drachm 52-53 (year 15), AR 17.5mm., 3.25g. BACIΛEΩC ΠOΛEMΩ-NOC Diademed head r. Rev. ETOYC IE Diademed and draped bust of Tryphaina r. RPC 3826.

Extremely Rare. Only three specime cited in RPC. Traces of restriking. Toned. Very Fine.



Antonia Tryphaina was the daughter of Polemo I of Pontos and his wife Pythodoris. She married Kotys VIII of Thrace, and bore him three sons who became kings: Polemo II of Pontos, Rhoimetalkes II of Thrace, and Kotys IX of Lesser Armenia. Her paternal grandfather was Zenon, a prominent orator and aristocrat, who had been an ally to Mark Antony. In addition, winning bids of EEC clients for this coin are subject to a 5% fee on hammer price as a reimbursement for import duty paid to HMRC.
